Mart Taniel is Estonian cinematographer (b. 11.aug.1976). He studied cinematography at the FAMU film school in Prague and also graduated from Tallinn Pedagogical University as cinematographer. He has been active on this field since 2005 and has shot over ten features. In addition also documentaries, short films, commercials and music videos.


Mart Taniel’s films have received numerous awards in Estonia and abroad. For “November”, Taniel received the award for Best Cinematography at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival in New York. The jury commented:

“One film was particularly audacious and showed supreme command of its visual language.”

Taniel was the director of photography on “FREE RANGE/ Ballad on Approving of the World” (2013, directed by Veiko Õunpuu), which won the “Most Beautiful Film of the Year” title from the Estonian Cultural Endowment.

For “The Idiot”, Taniel won the Best Cinematography prizes from the Black Nights Film Festival and the Estonian Cultural Endowment.

“The Temptation of St. Tony” won the Glass Eye Award for cinematography at the 2morrowIFF Film Festival in Moscow and “Autumn Ball” won Best Cinematography at the Transylvania International Film Festival’s Competition Program.
